Play – The Best Start

The most effective kind of education is that a child should play among lovely things.

The best start to life for children is to imitate the world around them imaginatively through play. True imaginative play is only possible during childhood. As adults, we can pretend that a block of wood is soap; for a child, the block of wood is soap. Pure imagination is a special gift for a short time – for the first ten years of life. Let’s make sure children experience ‘childhood’.

Given the right environment, play for children is as natural as breathing; it is the basis for their overall development, including social and language skills, problem solving and maths. During play, children use their imaginations to create a world from within themselves. If they have many opportunities to play, they are flexing their cognitive muscles (so to speak), and will become creative thinkers for life.

When considering child’s play, the three key words to remember are imitation, imagination and movement. These three impulses run constantly through a child’s brain. They are the foundation to childhood and the keys to becoming human.
